NHL Skates Online

I was pleased to read this Wall Street Journal article about how the National Hockey League is making a strong push marketing online and making it easier for fans to watch their games and interact with their favorite teams.

With the NHL getting killed on TV by other Pro sports like the NFL, it only makes sense for them to exploit the Internet and has introduced a
service (and lots more) that allows subscribers to watch nearly every game live on its Web

GameCenter Live, is a
way to serve its young, tech-savvy fans, many of whom don’t live in the hometown
of their favorite hockey team, and can’t catch its games on television.
Users to watch up to
four games at once or one game from several different camera

Read the article. It should give you ideas to use the Internet to beat your larger competitors.

Think about it.

If you were to start a new business to compete against YOU, you’d strive to be the online category killer in your field.  Strive now.

Marketing and Law

O.J Simpson is in the news again and it brought to mind a guy I discovered during his infamous trial of the century, the remarkable Gerry Spence (he never lost a case) and his great book, How to Argue and Win Every Time.

Years ago, I found in my Marketing studies a strong correlation between Marketing and the Law in terms of how you prepare your case to make your brand guilty or not guilty of something.

If you want to be a better Marketer, study books like Spence’s, Fisher and Ury’s, "Getting to Yes," and even this recent commentary by Paul Begala about, "10 Rules for Winning a Debate."

Warren Buffet

I’ve admired Warren Buffet for many years and here’s a great clip of him speaking to an MBA class at the University of Florida (one of several  – enjoy them all).

He’s been in the media a lot in recent years by choice and it appears he does it more so out of love and concern for our country and others and as a way of giving something back.

And, his recent book, Snowball will be on my bookshelf and read by year-end.

Buffet’s brand is a successful one for many reasons such as his intelligence, and energy, but more importantly his INTEGRITY – great qualities to have in a successful brand.

Brand Integrity is so rarely provided, but so very much respected, admired and desperately needed.

Certainly you can tell he love’s what he does too.  Surely, you may think it’s because he’s so incredibly wealthy, but my bet is that he’s always loved what he’s done and he’s honest to the core.

Letterman Rails Against McCain

During the recent "to do" in Washington surrounding the recent Economic Bailout, John McCain who was set to appear on the Late Show with David Letterman, said he had to get back to D.C.. because he was suspending his campaign to work on the bailout.

McCain bailed on Dave, only to appear with Katie Couric!

Dave busted him, and here’s a YouTube video with nearly 3 million views (for a quicker view – FFWD to 7:00 minutes in) to show what can happen to you and/or your brand when you’re untruthful!

And, here’s a commentary from AdAge.

It’s kind of neat how citizens can help you – in this case CBS – push your brand forward if you let them.

Just goes to show you that big brands like McCain 2008, make serious goofs!

You can go along way by being truthful, and authentic.

If McCain simply called Dave to say he could not make it, had to meet with Couric and would make it up to him, do you think Dave would have lampooned him?

I bet not.
