100 Social Media Marketing Listening Tools

My father told me many times when I was young that God game me two ears and one mouth for a reason…to listen! In my early days in marketing, while doing marketing research, I came across a great quote from Frederick the Great, “I can excuse being defeated but never being surprised.” And, I agree with him too. For, in this day and age of the Internet and social media there is so much free and easy information at your fingertips that it’s inexcusable for being surprised much less shocked about anything.

However the tough thing with information for me and so many others these days is organizing it into actionable data.

Here is a list of more than 100 listening and learning tools we’ve organized for our firm and use for reference. So much these days is made about content creation and publishing in social media – which I agree with – however, not enough effort is made about tools to speed up your research efforts with brand listening and competitive intelligence tools.

I hope this post helps you become a better marketer and feel free to use and add to the list because it’s certainly not exhaustive. And, remember one final quote:

Pirates Miss PNC Park Anniversary Tag

Your birthday.  Your spouse’s, kid’s, parent’s, grandparent’s, brother’s, sister’s etc., birthdays. Your wedding anniversary and/or your parent’s anniversary. The 4th of July – America’s anniversary. All big time events and occasions to celebrate right?

Well, as a ‘homer’ living in Pittsburgh, and as a professional marketer I’m baffled by the fact that the Pittsburgh Pirates marketing team did absolutely nothing – zero – not a thing – this season to celebrate the 10th anniversary of PNC Park (a gift by the citizens of Pittsburgh), arguably the best ballpark in all of Major League Baseball.

Hey, but don’t take my word that the Pirates’ PNC Park is the best, check out this brief  ranking list of the best Major League Baseball ballparks by some of the ‘folks that really know’:

YELP ranks PNC Park first

Fox Sports ranks PNC Park first

ESPN ranks PNC Park first

Forbes ranks PNC Park third

Now, certainly you can argue that PNC Park might not be the best Park in all of Major League Baseball, but you’d have to agree that it’s at least in the Top 5.  And, even if PNC Park wasn’t ranked that high, why wouldn’t you still take advantage of the significance of the date and celebrate all season long?

In fact, the symbolism for a 10th year anniversary for the Pittsburgh Pirates is incredible too.  The symbol for the 10th year anniversary is aluminum or tin and here we have one of the greatest companies ever headquartered in Pittsburgh – ALCOA – the Aluminum Company of America (its Headquarters is only .19 miles or 44 seconds from PNC Park) and the world’s leading producer of aluminum! And the designated gemstone of a 10 year anniversary is the diamond…get the symbolism, baseball diamond?

You could also argue, that the Pirates didn’t have much to celebrate and/or remember over the past 10 years, but don’t we all have bad years? It doesn’t mean you forgo celebrating your birth!

We do a ton of hospitality marketing consulting and anyone in the business will tell you the profitable, sales building significance of celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries.

It’s sad and disappointing that the Pittsburgh Pirates missed the tag on the 10th anniversary of PNC Park. They would have hit the cover of the ball knocking it clear out of the Park and into the Allegheny River!

Don’t forget to step up to the plate and swing for the fences when your brand’s birthday/anniversary rolls around!

You Don’t Need a Dog to Get Loyalty

And, you don’t necessarily need a loyalty program for your business!

I’m sure you’ve heard the an old saying, “If you want loyalty, buy a dog!” And, I agree!

Working for years in retail marketing, I’ve never been able to wrap my head around the long term benefits of loyalty programs.  Granted, American Airlines frequent traveler program – the “MacDaddy” of all frequent buyer programs (however, I remember S & H Green Stamps too) – did wonders for them. And, certainly a ‘loyalty’ program might make sense when two or more brand choices are similar, but my argument in this situation is that these brands aren’t working hard enough to establish a unique point of ‘value-added’ differentiation.

My argument for years about loyalty programs is that practically all of them are loosely based on extortion principles. And, brands would be far better off if they worked on creating unique points of differentiation (e.g., Southwest’s “Bags Fly Free”) resulting higher performing goods and services they could drive their own loyalty.

Southwest airlines has a frequent flier program, but they look at that initiative as a ‘greens fee.’

If no one else has one in your competitive set, then why start one?

Apple is a perfect example of a company that gets brand loyalty. I’m an extremely loyal Apple computer owner (along with millions of other people), but their prices are higher than their competitors and they have no loyalty program.

Here are 7 ways to drive brand loyalty

  1. Sell great products that add value to people’s lives
  2. Deliver lights out service
  3. Be dependable and trustworthy
  4. Be nice – be caring
  5. Play nice
  6. Follow ethical business practices
  7. Be part of the fabric in the communities in which you do business (get involved)

It’s nice to see some research to support my loyalty marketing experiences and beliefs over the years too.

For example, a survey of 1,000 adults (here’s a brief recap) from British agency 23red found that:

  • 91% of shoppers consider brands impact and contributions to the local community, the environment etc. when purchasing goods or services.
  • 74% of those surveyed are interested in a brand’s ethics before deciding to buy

However, brands must be sincere about their ethics and community involvement.

Here is a report of another survey that found discovered that when “average customer satisfaction increases over time, there is less incentive for a company to offer a loyalty program.”

Now, you might say, “That’s common sense!”

Then, I’d say, “You’re right, but why are so many companies offering loyalty programs and where’s their common sense?”
